MIL-R-6130 Silicone
MIL-R-6130 silicone meets the requirements of a U.S. military specification for chemically blown cellular rubber, which is more commonly known as sponge rubber and foam rubber. Note that while MIL-R-6130 was superseded by ASTM D6576 and SAE-AMS-R06130, this rubber specification still appears on older part drawings.
This spec-grade silicone is categorized by type, grade, and condition. This mil spec does not specify the use of an adhesive for holding the gasket in place during installation.
Types
- Type I – Open cell (sponge rubber)
- Type II – Closed cell (expanded rubber)
Grades
- Grade A – Oil and flame resistant
- Grade B – Nonoil resistant
- Grade C – Low temperature, nonoil resistant
Conditions (Firmness)
- Soft
- Medium
- Firm
Applications
- Type I MIL-R-6130 silicone rubber is used in shock absorbing cushions for mounting radio apparatus in crash pads, and in other applications that require absorbing shock and damping vibrations. It is not recommended for applications involving tensile loading, or where the cellular rubber will come in continuous contact with human skin.
- Type II MIL-R-6130 silicone rubber is used in flotation gear, expansion joint fillers, gaskets, and shock pads that require water resistance. It is not recommended for application with extreme high temperatures, or where the expansion of the material at high altitudes is a disadvantage.
