MIL-STD-417 TA Silicone Sheeting & Uncured Compounds

USA-Manufactured Mil-Spec Elastomers Backed by AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 Quality Systems

MIL-STD-417 TA silicone from ElastaPro meets the requirements of a U.S. military standard for solid elastomeric materials. These spec-grade silicones have designations that begin with the letters “TA” followed a three-digit number. MIL-STD-417 was replaced by MS3065, which has been replaced by the ASTM D2000 standard.

This aerospace fluorosilicone and military fluorosilicone is Made in USA under an AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 quality management system (QMS). ElastaPro provides a full Certificate of Analysis (COA) with every batch for traceability.

Unlike specific material specs, MIL-STD-417 is a comprehensive classification system establishing a standardized coding matrix for rubber polymers used in military applications.

Key Elements

  • Classification System: The standard assigns two-letter designations to elastomeric materials based on performance characteristics.
  • Performance Characteristics: These are physical and chemical properties of elastomers (e.g., temperature limits, oil/chemical resistance, compression set, etc.) that determine suitability as a military silicone.
  • Test Methods: Where practicable, MIL-STD-417 includes or references test methods for verifying the listed characteristics of solid silicone sheets.

Usage and Relevance

  • This standard was used by procurement and engineering to ensure consistent specification, classification, and testing of rubber components in military equipment.
  • Although the standard is now withdrawn for new design, it still may be referenced in older contracts, legacy hardware, or where qualification of an elastomeric material historically used under that classification system is relevant.
  • MIL-STD-417 classifications (e.g., “SB”, “RS”, “TA”, “CR”, “TB”) are used for specific elastomer types. These two-letter identifiers also map to ASTM D2000 designations.
